Concept of the month - BMW E1 The E1 Concept is deserving of the distinction of being BMW's first compact EV before the i3. We're probably one of the few kind-hearted people left to disagree with the insults levelled at it after it had been mocked by many. 
 The BMW E1 was the German automaker's first attempt at an EV, and it made its premiere at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1991. The Z11 chassis served as the foundation for the E1.
It was all show and no go because the car was never intended for production; instead, it served to demonstrate the brand's ability to build a small EV for their line of future models. Since then, BMW had avoided all attempts at electric vehicles (EVs) until the relatively recent i3. 
 The car's appearance would lead you to believe it is front- wheel-driven and designed with the budget-conscious buyer in mind. However, it turned out that it wasn't. Like all other naturally aspirated BMW vehicles, the E1's power was directed to the back wheels. The E1 appeared stylish in the 1990s. Because it had a distinctive appearance. Its shape was reminiscent of a jelly bean. Nothing else could have been fooled for a BMW's headlights.
